Today I was at Whale Fest, a community event raising awareness about the threats to whales in their habitats.
Living in California and near the coast has many blessings, including being able to see whales. My family and I love to go whale watching and it never gets old seeing these beautiful creatures in person.
Unfortunately whales are still threaten despite people being more conscious about animal well being in general and the effects of climate change.
The biggest threat to whales? Humans. I am not surprised though I really wish that wasn’t the case. Here are the threats that endanger whales:
- Boat strikes
- Entanglement
- Pollution
- Climate change
All of these dangers to whales, humans have a strong influence in them. Since we have a strong part to play humans need to be part of the solution.
How can you help? While out on a boat be mindful of your surroundings making notes of any whales. If you see a whale, stay away from it at a safe distance.
If you happen to see a whale injured or entangled, you can call 877.SOS.WHALE.
And to help all animals, be mindful of your waste and how your actions contribute to climate change.
The Whale Fest event was fun to attend. I am thankful I was able to learn more about these amazing creatures and how we can make sure they are here for generation to enjoy!
